A three-year-old boy found a gun in his mother’s purse and accidentally shot his two-year-old brother, mortally wounding him, according to the police of Gary, a city in the American state of Indiana, according to the media.
Officers were dispatched to a local hospital Friday night for a two-year-old gunshot victim, the agency reports.
The child’s mother told local police that her 3-year-old son found the gun in her purse after she left the bedroom and accidentally shot his younger brother, who later died of his injuries.
The Lake County District Attorney’s Homicide Task Force is investigating a shooting that happened at a home in Gary.
“We are conducting a criminal investigation, and then we will present it to the Lake County District Attorney, who makes a determination as to whether it was negligence or an accident,” Gary Police Chief Sam Roberts announced to VLS-TV.
Mayor Jerome A. Prince and Gary Police Chief Anthony Titus stressed the importance of adults taking steps to properly secure firearms and other devices that could “become weapons in the hands of innocent children.”
They specifically called for the use of gun cases or gun locks to secure firearms.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the loved ones of the two-year-old child who was so tragically taken from our community,” Prince and Titus said in a joint statement.
